Love Your Pet Day | A Letter to Kate

Dear Kate,

Well, it’s been a big year for us so far, hasn’t it. Last year you had to put up with admittedly less adventures than we usually get up to, but with the arrival of Alfie I hope you are as excited as I am about our family adventures to come this year!

There have been some huge changes in our household over the past month, but I want to make sure know how important you are to us and how much a part of the family you are.

Now did you know it was Love Your Pet Day this Friday the 20th February? Well I did (lucky you!), and not only do I have some quality Jen and Kate time planned but I also want to make a few promises to you for the year to come.

Love Your Pet Day is all about spoiling your dog and showing them that little bit of extra love. Now this to a lot of folks can mean a bit of pampering, toys or special treats – and we are all on board with that! But what I wanted to promise to you, and hopefully encourage others to do so also, is to give you what you actually need. This can mean more walks, more stimulating playtime or even just quality one on one time in this busy world we live in!

So with that said, here are my promises to you for Love Your Pet Day!

1. I promise to find new places for us to explore.

We had an amazing time at Dinner Plain last year – do you remember? I loved watching you bound around the snow drifts, you weren’t nervous at all about all the cold stuff! This year I promise to do my research and make sure we head off to a few places we’ve never been before!

2. I promise to not run you over with the pram wheels.

How fun has it been getting out for walks with Alfie! It must be nice having your pack around you all the time. I love that you aren’t alone all day now, and we can head out for walks while it’s still daylight! So with that in mind, I promise to endeavour to work on our pram/pup coordination and make sure I don’t catch you in the side with the stroller!

3. I promise to give you belly scratches when you want them.

If you are in need of a good scratch and tickle, then I’m there! I love that you trust me to show your belly to me and I will always ensure I never lose that trust with you. Incidentally I will always use the belly scratch time to check you for fleas and remove them forcibly if I find any little critters!

4. I will always make time for play.

When you bring me your favourite, chewed up ball, I will throw it for you, no matter how filthy it is! I love how when I get home you get so excited you race around the house looking for your special toy to bring me! I know you are showing me how much you love me by bringing me ‘your special ball’! Play time is important to both of us and we will have lots of it.

5. I promise to give you treats (but in healthy amounts!)

Ah treats, I know how much you love them! I promise you will get your share of treats this year, but as with all yummy things, moderation is key. I know it’s up to me to help you maintain your athletic physique for our adventures, so over indulging in treats isn’t the best way to do that! But that said, I promise you will get your share of the yummy stuff!

6. I promise to take time out and make sure we have quality Jen and Kate time.

I promise to head down to the beach with you and take in the sunset. I promise to go for a walk just you and me when we can. I know how much you rely on me for exercise, entertainment and stimulation and I promise to do all I can to meet those needs.

After all that’s really what Love Your Pet Day is about right? Really giving you what you need and not just another toy (although I’m sure you would love that!)

I can’t wait to see what 2015 brings us!

Love Jen

Kate’s going to love all those promises! She can also be the proud, big sister in introducing Alfie to all the fun of adventures….. and maybe the cold white stuff at Dinner Plain!

  • Karen says:

Such sweet words Jen! Tux would love the treats promise too…he could eat all day. Can’t wait to hear about your adventures as a family…hugs and pats

  • Wonderful! Such great promises and such a wonderful family you have.

  • Jo says:

Jen, I think you are a superhero for how well you’re juggling life with a new bubba, no sleep and an adventure dog! I’m so jealous of your trip to Dinner Plain too, can you take me next time as well? 😉 There are few things I love more in this world than Kelpie ears. Your pics made my day 🙂

Awww! Kate is one lucky pup! It is no easy task not running over dogs or people for that matter with a stroller. Kate certainly does get to go on plenty of adventures. Looks like she loves being a part of your family.

  • Amy says:

Awwww Baby Alfie is so cute! It must have been such a change for Kate but it looks like everyone is settling in well.

I’m sure Kate has found the new ‘pack member’ very interesting but like you said I think it’s fantastic that you are still planning to have some adventure time in the future!

You are an admirable mum and dog-mum! 😀
